Tax Commissioner Announces New Homestead Exemption Nov 10, 2006
DeKalb County Tax Commissioner Claudia G. Lawson announces that House Bill 595 was approved by the voters of DeKalb County during Tuesday's election. House Bill 595 is a special type of homestead exemption known as a property assessment freeze, which prevents property taxes from increasing due to rising property values. This type of exemption does not include new construction or improvements to the existing property. The exemption applies to all County taxes but excludes school, state, and city taxes. As written, the bill requires that homeowners must apply for this additional exemption regardless of previous homestead status.
The Tax Commissioner's office will mail property assessment freeze applications to current homeowners receiving homestead exemption. These applications are expected to be in mailboxes by the last week of November
and must be completed and returned to the Tax Commissioner's office by March 1, 2007. Applications received after March 1, 2007 will be applied to the following tax year. Taxpayers may also complete the property assessment freeze application online at www.co.dekalb.ga.us/taxcommissioner beginning December 1st. Tax Commissioner Lawson encourages taxpayers to take advantage of the online application or application by mail, but reminds taxpayers to visit one of the three office locations if personal assistance is needed.
The DeKalb County Tax Commissioner has three offices to serve taxpayers. The main office is located at 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur; North office at 1358 Dresden Drive NE, Atlanta, GA; and South office at 2389 Wesley Chapel Road, Decatur. The office may be reached by phone at (404) 298-4000 or email at: proptax@co.dekalb.ga.us.
